Italian basketball player spent ten days in a coma after a bone marrow transplant
Italian basketball player Achiille Polonara was in a coma for ten days, Sky Italia reports.
The serious condition was caused by complications after a bone marrow transplant to treat leukemia, which he had previously been diagnosed with. The athlete is allowed to leave the hospital.
In the summer it was reported that 33-year-old Polonara was diagnosed with myeloid leukemia. Previously, the basketball player underwent surgery to remove a testicular tumor, after which he returned to sports.
Polonara signed a contract with the Italian team Dynamo Sassari in August; he previously represented a number of clubs, including the Italian Virtus, the Spanish Baskonia, the Turkish Fenerbahce and Anadolu Efes, and the Lithuanian Zalgiris.
As part of the Italian youth team (players under 20), Polonara won a silver medal at the European Championship in 2011.
