Basketball Hall of Famer Lenny Wilkens dies in the US
Former basketball player and NBA coach Lenny Wilkens died at home in Medina (Washington, USA) at the age of 88, ESPN reports.
The former player and coach passed away on Sunday; the cause of death was not disclosed.
Wilkens was inducted into the US Basketball Hall of Fame three times: as a player, as a coach and as a member of the 1992 US Olympic Dream Team, for which he was an assistant coach.
As a basketball player, he never won an NBA championship, but he was a nine-time NBA All-Star as a point guard.
As head coach, Wilkens led Seattle to the 1979 NBA title and Team USA to victory at the 1996 Olympics. As an assistant to head coach Chuck Daly, he won the 1992 Olympics with the US team.
In the last years of his life, Wilkens led his personal charitable foundation and oversaw the work of the NBA Coaches Association.
