Former New York Knicks guard of the National Basketball Association (NBA) Michael Ray Richardson has died at the age of 71, the team’s press service reports.

“One of the toughest defenders of his time, he had a huge impact on the Knicks.” We express our deepest condolences to his family and friends,” the statement said.

The cause of Richardson’s death was not specified; earlier media reported that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Richardson was selected fourth overall by the Knicks in the 1978 draft. In the NBA, he also played for the Golden State Warriors and the New Jersey Nets (now the Brooklyn Nets).

In February 1986, Richardson was banned for life from the NBA for three violations of the league’s drug policy. He subsequently regained his right to play in the NBA, but decided to continue his career in Europe.

Richardson was a four-time NBA All-Star and led the league in steals in three seasons.
