79-72: Panczar and Jaworski lead to victory, boosting Bilbao’s cup ambitions

This Sunday in Milivilla, outsiders Melwyn Panzal and Justin Jaworski led Surne Bilbao to a 79-72 victory over Dreamland Gran Canaria, igniting Biscaia’s ambitions for another Copa del Rey appearance.

With this win, the Men in Black maintain their unbeaten league record at the Bilbao Arena this season, and with a balance of four wins and five losses, they are provisionally on the verge of qualifying for the cup at the end of the first round.

It was an undisputed victory, but it was also a very tough battle for Jaume Ponsant-Sarnau’s team. They found Panczal (15 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 5 steals, 5 fouls received, 31 PIR) and Jaworski (25 points, 4/4 T3) when they needed them most.

The Frenchman Louis Labailley (10) gave them a four-point lead (57-61), the biggest yellow advantage of the entire match, which was already repeated several times in the final quarter.

If Sweden’s base work lasted 40 minutes, the American guard came on in the final stretch and flipped the result with nearly consecutive 3-point plays. Two of his 3-pointers were almost unbelievable because of the distance he threw them.

Previously largely drawn from coach Xaka Rakovic’s squad, the team is left in a precarious balance with three wins and six losses, jeopardizing the Slovenian coach and Argentine Nico Brussino’s desired offensive plans for the top eight (17 points, six rebounds).

Tobey’s basket a minute and a half into the game started a very difficult first quarter, with a lot of fast breaks and mistakes, leaving us with an astonishing 2-4 score after 6 minutes of play.

Both teams started to lose their nerve, reaching a 14-16 lead in less than four minutes, and Wong’s two triples gave the visiting team eight points, giving the local team more points in a difficult contest.

Granca also started the second quarter with a basket from Samar (14-19), but Surun was the first to try to break free, gaining an 11-2 and 5-point advantage (25-20) with Fry’s 5 points and Javorski’s 3+1.

The Canary Islanders recovered and were beginning to reduce the advantage of the locals, who were leading on the scoreboard in the second quarter (25-25, 28-28, 29-29, 34-34), until Albisy’s triple, which almost hit the horn, tied the first half.

After the break, in the drive of great effort and hard work, the trend of the second quarter was maintained until the game was tied (55-55) at the end of the third quarter, with Javorskiy already warming his wrist, and Frenchman Pierre Perros leading the visiting team.

Then, in the final quarter, the first threat of a yellow came, 57-61, making it 57-63, a huge advantage for the visiting team, and Panczal and Jaworski giving them a 77-72 victory.

Zaporozhye coach: “It was a serious challenge for our team”

Head coach of BC Zaporozhye Dmitry Shchiglinsky He summarized the results of the team’s last matches in 2025 against Krivbass (68:84) and Niko-Basket (78:67).

“Going into the last calendar bubble this year we clearly understood how important this was for us in terms of tournament position. “Krivbass” were right behind us in the table and “Niko-Basket” were playing at home, so both matches promised to be extremely difficult. We were also without our captain Anton Buts, who was injured, which significantly affected the preparations.

We had a bad start to our match against Krivbass, the opponent scored their first long range shots, became confident and kept control of the match for most of the game. We managed to reduce the difference to 4 points in the fourth quarter, but unfortunately we did not have the strength to do more. Krivbass’ last attack with 11:0 gave them an important victory. In the absence of Anton Buts, they had to use rotation and it was not easy for Vyacheslav Kiktev to counter the opponent’s big players.

Our expectations were also the highest for our second match against Niko-Basket. We recently met with this team at the Ukrainian Cup and made a comprehensive analysis. I would like to thank my assistant for her quality work. We analyzed the mistakes in the previous match in detail and focused on playing defense. Even though we made many interventions at the beginning of the match, we could not immediately gain the scoring advantage. The team added more after the first quarter. There were quick breaks, easy points and a more organized attack, and these ultimately brought results. We got the win we needed.

Overall, I am happy with the results of this dough. We maintained our place among the top four teams in the Super League, so I evaluate the performance positively. Playing without one of the starting five players is a serious challenge for our team. I thank the men for their character; “After the defeat in the first match, no one gave up and the next day we played a high-quality game, first of all, as a single team.”
