Euroleague: 3 overtimes, performance record, Barcelona caught the leader
On December 19, six matches were played in the 17th round of the Euroleague regular championship.
Barcelona hosted Baskonia and won the historic match.
The Basques started the match better, winning the first quarter with a score of 26:17, and trailing their opponent by about 10 points in the second quarter, entering the long half with a +6 – 53:47 advantage. The same game continued in the third quarter, but towards the end Barça reduced the difference to 5 points (70:75) and equalized the score at the beginning of the fourth quarter, reaching 75:75. The game was then tied and Baskonia sent the game to overtime thanks to Howard’s accurate three-pointer 14 seconds before the siren. The fierce fight that went into the second overtime continued there as well, and Barça escaped defeat 122:122 thanks to Panther’s two-point field goal in the last second. In the third five-minute period, the home team continued to put pressure on their opponents and allowed them to score only 2 points (134:124).
This is the second game in Euroleague history where the teams went to triple overtime. In this match, the teams broke a record in the Euroleague by scoring 258 points, 2 points above Real Madrid and Anadolu Efes (130:126).
Barcelona also broke the tournament record for most points scored in a match; Kevin Panther scored 43 points, the eighth best result in tournament history.
