81-88: Real Madrid struggle to win at Baris Nord
This Saturday, Real Madrid won a close game away from Hiopos Lleida, winning a hard-fought victory (81-88) that was decided until the last moment.
Although the white team had the upper hand in the first period, Ilerdenses managed to equalize the score in the next two periods. In the last match, the experience and quality of coach Sergio Scariolo’s team tipped the balance in favor of the visiting side, but Lleida lacked the leadership of coach James Batemon, who was sidelined due to a viral infection.
Just like last season, Mario Hezonja showed off his locker with 22 points and a PIR of 25 for Baris Nord.
Personally, Jorge Goloman was the best in the Bordeaux team. The Hungarian center had 15 points and eight rebounds, posting a 19-digit PIR.
After Hiopos Lleida scored the first goal for Christels Zorics, the away team scored 10 consecutive points and established their first lead of the match (2-10, 3 minutes).
Ilerdenses responded by improving his shooting percentage and defensive intensity. Mikel Sanz reduced the gap to four points (17-21, 8 minutes).
However, Real Madrid were far more successful than the hosts, and a final push from the Whites at the end of the first quarter widened the lead once again (19-28, 10 minutes).
At the start of the second period, the atmosphere became heated as there were many protests, mainly from local residents, against the referee who called out a technical foul on Gerard Find.
On the sporting side, the match entered a phase of basket exchange between both teams (25-33, 23 minutes).
However, Lleida was more involved in the game, both offensively and defensively, and the comeback that upset Baris Nord culminated with 12 consecutive points for the Lleida team (37-36, 28 minutes).
Before intermission, the visiting team again flipped the scoreboard with another final drive, Alex Len’s dunk making it 43-46, and the players headed to the locker room.
After the restart, Lleida went one step further, giving control back to the Bordeaux team in front with a 9-0 run, forcing Sergio Scariolo to call a time-out (55-50, 23 minutes).
As happened in the previous two quarters, Madrid grew in the final minutes and managed to take the lead despite the home side’s solidity (65-66). Two free throws by Christels Zorics on the final play of the period gave Ilerdenses control back and everything was open for the final round (67-66, 30 minutes).
