NBA to retire number 6 in honor of 11-time league champion
The National Basketball Association will soon withdraw the sixth game number from circulation, according to the NBA website.
The association will make this decision in honor of center Bill Russell, who played in Boston under the sixth number and set a league record, becoming an 11-time NBA champion.
Russell died at the end of July at the age of 89. Russell is the most decorated player in NBA history. The basketball player won 11 championship titles with the Celtics in 13 years, he was an All-Star 12 times and was named MVP of the regular season five times. Russell has been inducted into the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Hall of Fame and the Basketball Hall of Fame.
