The Basketball Champions League Final Four in Bilbao
The Basketball Champions League Final Four will be played in Bilbao (6-8/5), according to FIBA. For the first time, the event will take place on neutral ground.
Bilbao is the city that will host the Basketball Champions League Final Four (6-8/5), as reported by FIBA. The news broke via the event’s official Twitter account. The races will be held in the Bilbao Arena, which has a capacity of 10,000 seats.
This is the first time the event has been held on neutral ground, as previous years the Final Four (and the last two years Final Eight) have been held at the headquarters of one of the finalists. This is definitely a bold move by FIBA as there is no longer the safety cushion provided by the presence of home team fans.
But after the Final Four in Antwerp in 2019 – where the organizers Antwerp did not qualify for the final – the event was just as successful as last year’s Final Eight in Novgorod in Nizhny Novgorod, where it was also successful despite the elimination of the Russian team in the quarterfinals, FIBA decided to dare to award the event to a city that will not have a representative.
“We are very happy that Bilbao will host the Basketball Champions League Final Four. We thank the City of Bilbao, the Spanish local and regional authorities, the Spanish Basketball Federation and the ACB for their commitment to assist us in organizing this event in Bilbao in the best possible and safest way for everyone involved, especially and accompanying members of all groups ” said Patrick Komninos to add:
“We recognized the City’s willingness to host this historic event and look forward to working together to host an amazing tournament that will conclude Season Four in an environment that has a proven track record of hosting basketball games at the highest level.” . This event will guarantee fans across Europe a unique weekend of basketball.”.
For his part, the President of the Spanish Basketball Federation, Jorge Garbahosa, stated: “It is a great pleasure and honor for the Spanish FA to see Bilbao host the BCL Final Four, a great event where Spanish teams usually perform very well.
Organizing such a large event is not an easy task, but in such a large arena and with the know-how of the Bilbao local authorities, with the support of the team, the Surne Bilbao Basket and all the relevant bodies, the ACB and the Spanish Basketball Federation , we will do our best to organize the best possible event. The level of the previous closing stages was excellent but we will do our best to support the organization to grow”.
