An additional hassle for AEK in the hands of Pistiolis
24-year-old Adriatic League second-scorer Daron “Fats” Russell is the regional player who will join Andreas Pistiolis’ Galatasaray.
A different type of point guard was chosen by Andrew Pistoli to fill the multi-experienced De Bost’s gap in the ‘ace’ of Galatasaray, AEK’s opponents in the new BCL group.
The -24-year-old American- Darron “Fats” Russell, As announced on Saturday, he is an outstanding player but his style differs from his predecessor who went to Villeurbanne as he is an outside player who likes to look at the basket first and create later. In fact, when he played for Mornar from Montenegro, he was the second top scorer in the Adriatic League (26.8 ppg with almost 35% from the three-point line), behind only Luka Bozic from Zadar, and the player with the record in the individual rating a game with 47.
He’s not far behind in passing, as he’s dished out 7.3 assists per game. With more than 20 shots and more than 7 fouls in his almost 35 minutes of participation each time, his tendency to go into the opponent’s basket was always evident.
The level is rising for Russell now and he definitely needs to be more of a team, integrated into the Greek coach’s system. In fact, it will be one of the problems that Elias Kanzouris will face in AEK’s (31/1 and 15/3) games against Galatasaray as the two teams coexist in the group of 16 with Malaga and Limoges.
