FIBA Champions League
The Swiss team has been banned from the Basketball Champions League due to an email error
Freiburg did the right thing, but the Swiss federation and FIBA didn’t have the right communication and as a result, the team was banned from the Basketball Champions League.
The teams for the regular season and the qualifying rounds of the Basketball Champions League were announced on Tuesday evening (June 27), but Friborg’s name was missing from the list. And as the publication of lematin.ch proves, the Swiss club’s agents were not responsible for the fact that the team was eliminated from the competition.
The President of Fribourg, Philippe de Gautreau, stated that all necessary steps had been taken towards the Swiss Basketball Federation. The correct paperwork was completed, but federation officials sent the email to the wrong recipient at FIBA, putting the team out of contention.
The two sides (Swiss FA and FIBA) are currently negotiating whether there is an opportunity for Friborg to enter the tournament, but it appears that one team would have to pull out for that.
