Mateus Ponitka (29, 1.98) is now a Panathinaikos player as Italian Rezzo Emilia’s announcement was followed by green KAE’s.

Mateus Ponitka (29, 1.98) joins the dynamic Panathinaikos team. The news was first announced by Rezzo Emilia, before announcing support from the Greens. Mateus Ponitka had a contract (2+1 months) with the Italian team, but that didn’t stop Panathinaikos from making one of their top players their own EuroBasket 2022 which was completed a few days ago.

With the addition of the ex-Zenit player, Panathinaikos added an all-around guard/forward to their roster, who primarily plays as a shooting guard and small forward, while also holding a virtual point guard role in Poland.

The relevant announcement states:

“KAE Panathinaikos announces the acquisition of Mateus Ponitkas for one year.

Mateusz Ponitka was born on August 29, 1993 in Ostrów, Poland and is 1.98 m tall. and competes for positions “2” and “3”. He took his first steps in basketball at UKS Kasprowiczanka Ostrow Wielkopolski before moving to AZS Warsaw University of Technology in 2009. In March 2012 he signed with Asseco Prokom and in the summer of 2013 he “moved” to Belgium’s Telenet Oostende and won the championship there with them.

In August 2015 he returned to Poland for Zielona Gora and was named EuroCup Rising Star of the 2015-2016 season. In the summer of 2016 he “moved” to Turkey to join Pınar Karşıyaka, while the 2017/18 season took him to Spain’s CB Canarias Tenerife.

After his time in the Spanish team, he switched to the Russian locomotive Kuban. There he moved to BC Zenit Saint Petersburg after one season, where he stayed until 2022. In the summer of 2022 he signed for Italy’s Reggio Emilia, from which he moved to Panathinaikos.

In total, he has played five seasons in Euroleague, three with BC Zenit Saint Petersburg, one with Zielona Gora and one with Asseco Prokom, averaging 8.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game.

In the Eurocup, he played four seasons with Telenet Oostende, Zielona Gora and Lokomotiv Kuban, averaging 9.7 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.2 assists.

At EuroBasket 2022, Ponitka led the Polish national team to fourth place, averaging 13.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game.
