Barcelona go to Russia but Abrines reacts
Alex Abrines was unconvinced by the Euroleague guarantees of Barcelona’s safe passage and stay in Russia.
Barcelona’s program in the EuroLeague includes two consecutive games on Russian soil. The one from Friday (February 25, 6 p.m. Novasports 4HD, LIVE from Sportish) with Zenit in St. Petersburg and the postponed one on Sunday (February 27, 5 p.m. Novasports 5HD)., LIVE from Sportish) at CSKA in Moscow.
So it made sense that what happened at the Russian-Ukrainian border in the early hours of Thursday and Putin’s order for military intervention in the areas recognized as independent democracies should cause concern among the Blaugrana. In fact, the club’s people asked for clarification from the organizing authority as to whether and how safe travel is during such a period.
According to local media, the response they received was that there was no reason to postpone the trip or the matches on offer and that both the transfer and the return to Spain were guaranteed. The Catalans feared there was a risk of being trapped in Russia or that certain players, especially the Americans, would not be allowed to enter.
The league has given guarantees and the 15:30 flight will operate normally. Of course, Alex Abrines wasn’t convinced that moving to Russian territory was the smartest thing to happen. He even publicly expressed his concern, writing: “I don’t like that I have to go to Russia today“.
