Johannes Vogtmann spoke to Kicker about his decision to leave CSKA Moscow because of the war in Ukraine.

Johannes Vogtmann is one of the many foreigners who decided to leave Russia after war broke out in Ukraine. The veteran CSKA Moscow senior spoke to Kicker about the events of the past few days and the thoughts running through his mind, clarifying that he is not in the mood to return to CSKA Moscow (or any other Russian team) if the war didn’t come stop.

Like all of us, we were surprised when we heard the news that Russia had started a war in Ukraine. After a day or two of thought, I decided I didn’t want to stay in Moscow. In the current situation, I can’t imagine playing for a Russian team. Even if it’s just basketball, it creates a symbolism that I don’t think is right at the moment“He first explained, adding:

The Russian President is responsible for this bitter war because innocent people are dying in Ukraine because of him. Millions of people have to leave their homes, children lose their homes and their lives. I could not stay in Russia as if nothing happened, especially since we do not know when the situation will change. Otherwise, I didn’t feel safe there either“.

Johannes Vogtman has a contract with CSKA Moscow until 2023.
