Basconia smiled for the first time in 2022, after eight straight defeats. With Wade Baldwin at the helm and Matt Costello’s versatility, the Spanish team beat Anadolu Efes (87-74) at home to break away from the bottom of the table.
The visitors were in control for two and a half seasons, but when Sein Larkin and Vassilie Mitsic stopped scoring regularly, the game turned upside down to the detriment of Anadolu Efes.
The race
Basconia started the game with an appetite, up +7 (7-0 in 2′), but the excitement came very quickly. Shane Larkin rushed to the ground to save the situation and changed the story of the game within four minutes. The explosive Anadolu Efes guard had 5/5 three points by the end of the first period (22-24 in 10′) and helped his team find the rhythm.
What Vassilie Mitsic did with Shane Larkin was enough for the guests despite the hosts’ best efforts. Both had 31/43 points before the break, which was the main reason for the +7 (36-43) of the half, where Anantolou Efes had 10/17 three points – against 3/15 of Baskonia.
After the break, the hosts improved significantly in the back area. Which gave them the confidence to throw rim shots and hit the gas pedal so hard that they turned the game on its head within minutes. Matt Costello hit a double-double before the end of the third quarter, with Sander Raieste contributing as the X-Factor.
Somehow the +4 (62:58) of the 30th minute came about, which was extended to the finale. This was not only due to the offensive comfort of the hosts, but also to the fact that Vassilie Mitsic and Sein Larkin could no longer find the goal. From the moment the others were fickle, nothing could change and Basconia clinched the win, their first to win in the EuroLeague in 2022.
