War in Ukraine: Five foreign Zenit players return to Russia to win VTB League
Zenit announced the return of five foreign players (Jordan Lloyd, Alex Poithres, Matthew Ponitka, Billy Baron, Tyson Carter) with the goal of winning the VTB League.
About two weeks ago, in the first days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Zenit informed foreign players that they are free to leave the country if they don’t feel safe. With a footnote: their contracts “freeze” as long as they are outside of St. Petersburg. Opera and means that there was no possibility to register another club. Unless they themselves demanded their allowance – with all the consequences in terms of wages and buy-out.
Thus, on Monday 14 March, while the war in Ukraine is still raging, Zenit announced that five of the foreign players in the squad have returned to St. Petersburg.
The story of Jordan Lloyd (guard), Alex Poithres (centre), Mateusz Ponitkas (forward), Billy Baron (guard) and Tyson Carter (guard) who returned to Zenit’s base to work with the goal of winning the title win VTB league.
According to the Russian club’s corresponding simple announcement, the players returned to Zenit’s training center “after short breaks related to the need to visit their home.”
However, this return does not pre-empt the return of Zenit, CSKA Moscow and Unics Kazan to the EuroLeague as the days go by, and the tournament’s clubs appear adamant about excluding the three Russian sides from this season.
