Euro League
The proposal by Olympiacos in the EuroLeague to postpone the 18th and 19th Games
In a letter dated December 28 Olympiakos asked the EuroLeague and the teams for two things: the postponement of the 18th and 19th Games and their postponement in March and the shortening of the quarantine from 14 to 7 days. The postponement did not take place and in the end 13 of the 18 games will not be played.
At a time when the spread of the micron mutation is now spiraling out of control, the EuroLeague has postponed eight of the nine games of the 19th game of the regular season. Most of the teams in the league have a significant problem with Covid-19, with Olympiakos going through this uncomfortable process lately, since the OAKA derby with Panathinaikos and beyond.
Piraeus announced on Tuesday the 28th. They explained the importance of vaccination with the third dose to the athletes who had not yet done it, and at the same time suggested reducing the quarantine from 14 to 7 days exclusively for the vaccinated basketball players.
Olympiakos’ rationale was simple: to maintain the credibility of the event as these two games were rescheduled to March when there would be two weeks of doubles. Piraeus explained how important it is for the 18 teams to play with the fullest possible squad, with people in the stands for sponsors and for television rights. That was their suggestion, but it fell on deaf ears as the EuroLeague postponed five games for the 18th and eight games for the 19th. On the positive side, the quarantine was shortened, as they initially suggested.
Otherwise, three of George Bartzokas’ sick athletes had negative tests on Wednesday (January 5th). These are three athletes who were positive on December 26th. The individual will be thoroughly examined by a doctor and, if these are clear, will return to training on Thursday (June 1st) after a previous second negative test. If everything goes well, normality will have returned to Piraeus within the weekend and everyone will step on the floor.
