Real Madrid – Bayern 88-97: Double with an unimaginable surprise of -16
Bayern Munich caused an unimaginable upset at -16, beating Real Madrid at the WiZink Center and sending Monaco into the playoffs to Olympiakos!
The final game of the regular season in Madrid was unique! Real Madrid impressed for three seasons, were +16 in the 30th minute against Bayern (75-59) but saw Andrea Trinkieri’s team pull off an unimaginable upset and take the win at the WiZink Center (97-88) .
The visitors were indifferent (and tired, too) on points, but found a way to return to a largely lost game and end the regular season on a smile. Of course, their fate hasn’t essentially changed as they will face Barcelona in the playoffs.
As for Real Madrid? The suicide of the WiZink Center sent it to 4th place in the rankings, but so did Monaco on Olympiakos! Incidentally, the “Queen” ended the regular season with eight defeats in the last ten games.
The race
Real Madrid showed early on how much they wanted to win against Bayern, who were deadly tired (due to the long games). The hosts reached +6 (14-8 in the middle of the first period) but very quickly led to +10 (27-17 in 11′) before the storm started from the periphery. Armed with the three, Pablo Lasso’s team finally escaped and managed the +18 (52-34) of the break that saw them have 2/7 twos and 13/22 threes.
A game that seemed to have started early on turned into a derby on the home straight. Quite simply because Bayern – almost suddenly – decreased their performance, both in defense and in attack. After Jean-Marco Cisco carried all of the “1” and Ognjen Jaramaz shot one basket after the other, the German team was now 3’24” ahead (82-84) at the end of the game.
That’s it! Andrea Trincieri’s players were full of confidence and confidence, they used every big shot they took from then on and pulled off a great win. Not selectively, but on a psychological level, before the start of the playoffs.
