Villeurbanne put it (very) hard against CSKA Moscow, but Dimitris Itoudis’ team won (90-83) thanks to the performance of Daniel Hackett and the precious help of Alexi Svend in the fourth period.

Villeurbanne did everything for the double, but in the end CSKA Moscow celebrated thanks to Daniel Hackett and Alexei Svend (90:83). The former Olympiacos guard did everything, as in OAKA, at 26’16”, which was on the floor, offered 27 points (with 6/8 two points, 3/4 three points and 6/7 shots), 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

For three seasons, the lead changed off and on, almost every cast. In the latter, however, Dimitris Itoudis’ players made great shots, scored in personal phases and built up +11 (79-68) in the 37th minute, which was not overturned until the end.

Despite the ambitious efforts of the guests, the essence could not be changed because there was no other time. CSKA Moscow stayed ahead until the final and clinched a much-needed victory in the 21st game of the EuroLeague.

The race

Villeurbanne showed early on that he would not be easy prey for CSKA Moscow. Despite the short Corona-related absence, the French players seemed ready to harm the hosts.

Despite good percentages, the “bear” could not gain a safety advantage, the +5 (28:23) in the 12th minute was his biggest advantage until the end of the first part. You see, James Gist seemed to be spending his second youth at the MegaSport Arena and did a great job against Nikola Milutinov and Joel Boloboi.

It was on the same wavelength in the third ten minutes, with CSKA Moscow looking trapped and lacking the energy required. Daniel Hackett, of course, picked up where he left off in OAKA two nights ago, leading aggressively but the rest didn’t follow. Staying within range, Villeurbanne quickly recovered from the hosts’ new +5 (56-51 in 28′) and finished the season in “X” (61-61), ready for the final meters of the race.

However, Daniel Hackett’s accuracy and Alexei Svend’s talent were decisive. The two stepped in, manifesting most of the Russian occupation and ensuring CSKA Moscow got away at +11 (79-68) in the 36th minute. The guests made one last attempt to pounce thanks to two consecutive threes, but nothing changed in essence until the final.

CSKA Moscow stayed ahead, took the win and stayed calm inside.
