Euro League
Alba Berlin – Unics Kazan 81-53: German supremacy and Russian retreat
Alba from start to finish, Alba capitalized on Unics’ bad moon to score his seventh EuroLeague win, 81-53 – fifth inside. At 12-10, the Russian team is now in danger of dropping out of the top eight.
Alba has no tangible goals in the Euroleague, but rarely lets games end without a fight. When her opponent on the ground allows her to play at her own pace, she also achieves wins that improve her record in the tournament. As happened in the impressive 81-53 against the deformed Unics in Berlin.
Israel Gonthaleth’s team led 7-4 for the first time and have never looked back. The +5 of the first period began with geometric advances and the Kazan Greens never managed to increase their stature should they claim their first win after two straight losses and four in their last five games.
Velimir Perasovic’s players were wide off the touchline (3/23 three-pointers, 49 misses in total) and from the moment the hosts controlled defensive rebounds, it was very easy to maintain their first-half gains (36- 26) and not only take no chances, but celebrate their biggest win of this year’s event.
The race
It was obvious from the start that Unics is aggressive on a very bad night. Both Hezonia and Canaan and John Brown were trapped and didn’t help in areas where the Russian team needed them, losing shot after shot. Something the controlled Alba was sure to take advantage of to build the solid foundations of her dominance. The hosts weren’t very accurate either, but with more correct decisions in their own possession, they went 36-26 in the dressing room.
The double-digit difference was significant enough for a low-stakes game. Eventually, Perasovic’s team failed to flip the switch, see the light and handle it. On the contrary, he played steadily without a compass and orientation (only 6 last passes), causing him to go completely off the road. The hosts had the game in their own waters and from 56-35 from 30′ it was understood they would achieve a comfortable dominance that was never questioned.
