The MVP

Thomas Hertel. With Williams-Goss in the shoals, alto with Sergio Yul, the Frenchman was signed to raise the level of the Madrilenians and he was amazing against Olympiakos. Effectively devoid of blackmail, Hertel proved an insurmountable problem for the Red-Whites’ defense and won the game’s MVP award. In 25 minutes, the veteran playmaker had 20 points from 5/5 two points, 3/7 three points and 1/2 shots, two rebounds and three assists.

The weak link

Thomas Wookup. It’s not that he didn’t fight, it’s that he came in with 2/2 shots and finished it on 3/10 while missing an open three from the right corner for a score of 67-65 . The American should be more of a help in terms of scoring and execution, but he’s not the only one to hurt his team in good-conditions situations.

The stats that stood out

Eddie Tavares finished his first pass of the game with three blocks, with 7/19 shots Olympiakos finished the first period. At half-time, the hosts had heartbreaking percentages of two points (4/13) and three points (4/20), with Hertel the only one effective as nobody else had more than three points, while Vezenkov was on 3/3 shots 10 was 3/3 shots. At the end of the night, Piraeus had 5/23 threes to trash the only six mistakes they made for the 15 shared assists. The difference in rebounds is impressive, with the Madrilenians having 17 more as they renewed 15 attacks.

The race

Olympiakos opened the match with his classic five, with Fal trying to wear down Tavares but he couldn’t and had a bad finish near the basket. The 7-6 until the TV time-out almost in the sixth minute said it all about the poor start of both teams at a time when Wookup was the red-white’s top player. Slouka’s effort didn’t help with the rim shot but with the creation, with Jean-Charles setting a three to make it 10-13 and the result of the third showed the stubbornness Piraeus had for a great result in a very difficult home.

Sloukas scored impressively from medium and close range, Olympiakos went to +9 (24-15 in 13 minutes) with Hassan Martin having good minutes before Vezenkov scored a three for a 20-30 and Zan-Charles went on the offensive for a rebound 20-32 at 16′. The hosts seemed shocked at how well-read their opponents appeared, Fal scored 20-36 in 17′ and everything seemed dreamy for the Red and Whites who, the better they worked on defence, the more they believed the joke was on Center would be victorious.

The 24:38 of the half left the feeling that Real will come in furiously in the second half to gnaw the difference and that really happened. Hertel struck from long range, scoring from close range to make it 37:45 in the 25th minute, Yaboussele surprised and reduced to six after a mistake by Sloukas, and Williams-Goss scored a four in the 28th minute to make it 50:51 and so on was the result of the third period. A third half that was somewhat expected as Olympiakos continued to fail to find the outside shot while Sloukas – Vezenkov were absent after a good twenty minutes.

A Vezenkov three-pointer (55-54 in 32′) stopped Olympiacos at a turning point, scoring a foul to overtake again (55-57), whereupon the Madrid team scored a 5- reacted. 0 and Dorsey screaming presents an indirect three-pointer tied in 35′ at 62-62. Fal scored after an assist from Dorsey to make it 65-65 but then failed to overtake! This was followed by a basket from Hertel and a three from Fernandez to make it 70:65, two baskets that ultimately decided the game at 47 inches.
