Buduchnost – Prometheus 95-89: One defense removed from an unrepeatable double
Prometheus came back from -20 in the third half, missing just one save from victory in regular time but ultimately losing to Bunduchnost (95-89) in overtime, ending his EuroCup unbeaten streak.
Prometheus turned around a game that seemed lost in Podgorica, reaching a defense away from the doubles but in overtime it was betrayed by its strength and defense, losing to Buduchnost (95-89). The first in the group stage of the EuroCup, after two wins in a row.
Maki Yatra’s players recovered from -20 after 29 minutes, with Nikos Gikas making two big threes from 37′ to 39′ and Joe Young putting Prometheus ahead with 7.7” to go. The home side hit back immediately, however, and Phil Booth responded with a layup to send the game into overtime, where Buduchnost smiled.
The race
The high game speed was not a problem for Prometheus, at least in the first section. And that’s because his attack worked effectively, with 6/9 shots and 3 assists that helped Makis Giatras’ team get close (16-14 at 7′). Gradually, of course, it became more difficult. On the one hand because the defense continued to be problematic, on the other hand because the attack was no longer as effective. Therefore, the gap opened up sharply from 15′, with -8 (39-31 at 15′) being just a small indication of the problem. The first part ended with Buduchnost at +15 (50-35) with excellent percentages in twos (18/27) and Prometheus with more errors (10) than assists (6).
Despite the interruption at the break, the hosts didn’t take their foot off the gas. Everything else. Because of this, their lead reached +20 (67-47 at 27′), the point at which the game’s epilogue was essentially written. And that’s because Prometheus didn’t show that he has the energy and percentages to bring the situation together, much more they continued to be fickle in the creation part (8 assists for 14 mistakes in 30 minutes).
However, in the last ten minutes it was like the switch flipped, like we were seeing a different team. Delightful, impressive and very effective in attack, Prometheus turned the game upside down. Nikos Gikas played a leading role in the turn, making two big threes in the last few minutes (the second at 37.1” to the end), Prometheus taking the lead just before the end (77:79) and giving the first reason together for the win.
By 7.7” in the final, Joe Young gave Prometheus the lead again, but Phil Booth soon responded and sent the game into five minutes of overtime.
There, the hosts were more efficient in attack and drove to victory to break Makis Giatras’ men’s unbeaten streak in the EuroCup.
