Hamburg – Prometheus Patras 103-105: step four in Germany’s thriller
A big basket and an even stronger defense in the final seconds gave Prometheus Patras the away win against Hamburg (103:105). Yannis Christopoulos’ team secured the ticket for the “16” of the EuroCup.
Prometheus made the decisive step after the double against Hamburg (105-103) to finish in the top four of his group. Yannis Christopoulos’ team held on to the game with too much possession and accuracy percentages, clinching the big double thanks to a last-second goal and save.
It was Dustin Hogg who gave his team the kiss of life after his own offensive rebound at 22.8”, followed by Arnolda Kulboka’s great save against Ziga Samar for the last possession of the night. Prometheus Patras thus clinched victory for Germany and secured a lead to finish in the top four of their group.
The race
It became apparent early on that the winner would be judged on offensive efficiency and not on defensive consistency. Prometheus Patras had no problem with that, however, as they took a +8 lead in the second period (42-50 at 28′). As long as Yannis Christopoulos’ players (see above) were constantly in twos and threes there was no need to worry, but after the break defense became a problem. That’s why Hamburg managed to stay close and even took the lead at the beginning of the fourth period (85:83 at 32′).
As the game devolved into a bitter bra de fer, everything was decided in two stages at the last minute. In the first, Dustin Hogg took the offensive rebound from a missed shot by John Thomason and scored with a 22.8 left, while Arnolda’s Culboca switched defense to Zyga Samar right after.
