Real Madrid and Gran Canaria managed the EuroLeague and EuroCup double this year. For the third time, two Spanish teams reach the top of both competitions in the same season.
The consistency of the Spanish teams in recent years is admirable. This year, for the third time since 2000, two teams from the Iberian Peninsula have won the EuroLeague and the EuroCup in the same season.
Through the hands of Sergio Yul, Real Olympiakos hit the canvas in the Final Four 2023 in Kaunas and lifted their 11th trophy in Europe’s top club competition. Not long ago, Gran Canaria had defeated Turk Telekom to become champions of the EuroCup, securing their place in the EuroLeague. Although their presence there next season is far from certain, it needs to be thought about.
Barcelona and Valencia have actually managed this informal double twice in the past. In the 2002/03 season, the Blaugrana won their first EuroLeague, while the Orange were crowned EuroCup champions and clinched their first European title. Simultaneous successes in the EuroLeague and the EuroCup were achieved again by Barcelona and Valencia in the 2009/10 season.
