Doncic takes legal action against his mother
Luka Doncic has filed a lawsuit against his mother over the trademark of his name, with her publicly retorting that someone carries it.
Luka Doncic’s excellent relationship with his mother Miriam Potterbin has been mentioned many times. But apparently things are not what they seemed.
As revealed by American journalist Mark Stein, the Mavericks star has filed an application with the US Patent Office, where she is asking for the registration of the “LUKA DONCIC 7” trademark, which she owns, to be canceled. The reason is that he wants to make his own line under the “LUKA DONCIC” brand, but this cannot be done until his mother’s brand is deleted.
Based on what has been revealed, Doncic gave his mother permission to use this sign when he was a beginner. However, a few months ago he applied for the registration to be transferred to him, but the negotiations did not lead to any result, which led him to the decision to proceed with the lawsuit for filing the specific application, which is now final.
Doncic has long had nothing to do with his mother’s company, which exploits his name as it is now under her own control and that of Boris Potjeg. The reason why Doncic made this move is that because of this particular company he no longer has control over his name(!) for promotional reasons.
For her part, Doncic’s mother responded publicly with her comments to Slovenia’s MMC RTV, not wanting to elaborate on the matter but stressing that “Everything that has been written comes from people who have followed Lukas for two years and want to review his life and career. I don’t want to air our laundry, especially now that Luka has to focus on the Slovenian national team.”
