A Suns shareholder called for Sarver’s resignation
The situation looks worse for the Suns by the day, as a team shareholder wrote a letter demanding Robert Sarver’s resignation over his punishment by the NBA following allegations of sexism, racism and misogyny.
Robert Sarver is in dire straits and it looks like things are only going to get worse from here. The Suns owner was banned for a year and fined $10 million for sexism, misogyny and racism. Jam Najafi responded to this and called for his resignation.
Najafi is a shareholder in the Suns – in fact he is the club’s second largest shareholder – and one of the club’s three vice-chairmen and has written in a letter saying he cannot tolerate the behavior that has been exposed.
“Group investors are temporary guardians. If we, the leaders of sport, don’t hold ourselves to high standards, how can we expect a functioning society that operates with integrity and respect at all levels?” Najafi finally asks at one point:
“I cannot in good conscience just step back and allow our children and future generations of fans to think that such behavior is tolerated out of wealth and privilege. Therefore, as Vice President of Suns, consistent with my commitment to help eliminate all forms of racism, sexism and prejudice, I call for the resignation of Robert Sarver.”
With the situation now reeking of gunpowder — particularly after comments from LeBron James and Chris Paul — it will be interesting to see what happens from here.
