The Celtics announced the one-year suspension of Ime Udoka for violating the team’s bylaws, while the possibility of a layoff remains open.

Ime Udoka will not coach the Celtics in the 2022-23 season. In a more or less well-known decision, the Celtics announced that they had given their coach a one-year ban for an affair with an employee of the team, which was forbidden by internal regulations. The team is coached by his former assistant, Joe Mazzula.

However, the young technician’s punishment may only have been the beginning, with the possibility that he will subsequently be released remains open. Whatever the case, this is a historic decision as it is unprecedented for a coach to be penalized with a one-year ban from the team.

I want to apologize to the players, the fans throughout the Celtics organization and my family for letting them down.” Udoka told ESPN to add: “I’m sorry for putting the team in this difficult position and I accept their decision. Out of respect for those involved, I will not comment further.”

Udoka took over as coach of the Celtics last summer, had a terrific rookie season and led the team to the NBA Finals where the Warriors eventually won the championship 4-2.
