Philadelphia 76ers
After 9 months of waiting and patience, the Sixers have been acknowledged for the way they have handled the unprecedented situation involving Ben Simmons. Basically, the word ‘justification’ seems small to describe what happened as they finally got the player they wanted since the start of last season: James Harden.
The Sixers brought ups and downs in the East with the takeover of “Mousia”, but also in the NBA. With Simmons removed from the team, that means they’ve effectively swapped Seth Curry and Andre Drummond for Harden and Paul Millsap. There is no way to consider this a “defeat”.
Many might say that Harden might not be a match for the Sixers’ Joel Ebid, that Carrie’s shot provided solutions, that Drummond was the ideal backup center. At the end of the day, however, the Sixers turned an “invisible” player into one of the best players in the league who was in the top 5-10 until last year (this year generally didn’t play well due to his injury and condition with the Rockets). Milwaukee Bucks
It was a common secret that Dode DiVincenzo was no longer a good match for the Bucks after Grayson Allen’s contract extension. The fact that Milwaukee managed to trade him in for a gunpowder smoked forward/center like Serge Ibaka is definitely a win.
The Bucks needed another big one because behind the trio of Giannis Antitokoumbo, Bobby Portis and Brooke Lopez (who remains injured) they only had rookie Samos Mamukelasvili. Ibaka is recovering from an injury but in his recent games with the Clippers he has shown he is recovering. He’s a two-way big who can play alongside Giannis, he’s a good shot and a good blocker. He has all the elements the Bucks have been looking for to have “safety” in case something goes wrong with Lopez while providing another big body in a potential playoff meeting with the Sixers of Ebid.
Di Vincenzo’s loss in the periphery is no small one. The Italian-American Guard played a role in the team. Pat Conaton’s injury will make her even more noticeable. But that was something they couldn’t anticipate in Milwaukee that — based on their needs in the trade deadline — made the right move.
Boston Celtics
The Celtics are on 6 straight wins and are on the rise. On the last day of the exchange, it seemed like they wouldn’t be very active. In the end, however, they pulled off the surprise by acquiring Derrick White from the Spurs (for Romeo Langford and Josh Richardson) and Daniel Thais from the Rockets for Dennis Schroeder. The moves may not look impressive, but they’re packed with substance.
Derrick White is one of the most underrated guards in the NBA. A good organizer, an excellent defender, has the ability to put together an excellent defensive duo in the guard positions alongside Marcus Smart, but also to help Tatum fight more often as a power forward. As for Thais? It returns to familiar surroundings and offers another large body near the basket.
Ben Simmons James Harden
To say that Ben Simmons and James Harden weren’t happy with the Sixers and the Nets, respectively, isn’t exactly a secret. On the last day of the exchange, their wish came true and they changed the environment. If they are not happy now, they never will be.
Of course, things aren’t easy for either of them. Harden bears the “stamp” of the player who asked for a move practically twice in one year. Simmons may have left the Sixers, who were stressing him out, but the Nets aren’t exactly…walking in the park as they’re under pressure. However, they both got what they wanted, so they should probably consider themselves the winners.
Charlotte Hornets
The Hornets wanted to change something after 6 consecutive losses. Behind Mason Plumley they had no other center to trust. And then came the prospect of Montreal Harrell, whom the Hornets took over by sending the Wizards one player who didn’t play (Vernon Maxey) and another who played a small part (Is Smith). Somehow they filled a big gap.
The truth is, at first glance, Harel doesn’t cover the Hornets’ real problem, which is defense. But he’s still a player who has the ability to bring solutions and toughness to a team that’s a bit soft at times.

It’s a given that the Mavericks have something on their mind and know more than those who don’t live it. However, the fact that the best deal they found for Christophe Porzingis was Davis Bertans and Spencer Dingwidi shows they did something wrong. The Nets always come across as in a class of their own. That’s exactly what’s happening now following Harden’s trade with the Sixers, who traded Ben Ben Simmons, Seth Curry and Andre Drummond.
The addition of Ben Simmons seemed logical for a long time as the Australian theoretically closes some holes, particularly in defence. This is, of course, subject to certain conditions: from accepting the role he’ll have — which he’ll likely need off the ball often due to the Durands and (when he plays) Irving — to how he’s managed championship pressures in Brooklyn since in general, its psychology is fragile.
On paper, the Nets have a great squad again. On the evening of December 25 and the night of December 26, five Christmas games were traditionally held as part of the NBA regular season.
