After breaking the internet last season, Ja Morad he wasted no time in doing the same at the start of the 2022-2023 campaign.
Just two games into his fourth NBA season, Morant has been surprising with his playmaking ability, athleticism and scoring, reminding us all that he is the definition of a showman. even when the game doesn’t count.
His latest feat was a 49-point performance in which he has delivered several spectacular plays that are becoming the norm, but far from normal.
Morad’s rise to NBA stardom has been accompanied by plenty of superstar moments. You know what that means: watch the videos!
Let’s start with the defensive part. Defense wins championships, right? The art of the chase block is something we’ve seen from the likes of LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo, who are both two feet tall. If James and Antetokounmpo dominated him, Morad redefines him, using his uncanny athleticism at 6-foot-3 to make blocks look routine for a point guard.

These types of plays should not be normal for a point guard.

There’s something to be said for making the abnormal seem, well, normal. Two of Morad’s 49 points against the Rockets came in the form of a spectacular transition shot that he made almost natural.

Morant changes direction, changes speed, then makes the right decision to shoot above the rim with his free hand in the blink of an eye. In any case, that’s probably an upside basket for a typical point guard, but Morad is anything but.

As for the show, Morant makes the “typical” point guard stuff look pretty good.

When number 12 is in action, you can count on seeing at least one highlight. And as far as highlights go, it’s impossible to praise Morant’s game without including highlights from his show against the Rockets. By the way, he scored those 49 points on 17-of-26 shooting from the field (65.4%).

Houston isn’t going to contend for a championship this season, but every part of Morad’s performance was necessary: He was +/- +23 in the 31 minutes he was on the floor. (Scored 49 points in 31 minutes!)
With Dillon Brooks, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Ziaire Williams on the sidelines to open the season, Morant is doing whatever it takes to get his team to win until everyone is up and running.
Morant’s style and spirit will allow him to continue to dominate the highlight video and keep the Grizzlies among the top ranked teams in the West.
