Giannis Antetokounmpo showed just how important he is to the Bucks’ operation after he was responsible for 45 of the team’s 90 points in the win over the Sixers. Stefanos Makris analyzed using InStat Scout.

Giannis Antetokounmpo led the Bucks to a 90-88 win over the Sixers in Philadelphia, starting the season with a double-double and once again leading his team.

“Greek Freak” finished the match with 21 point on 8/13 2-pointers, 1/3 3-pointers, 2/5 shots, 13 rebounds, 8 assists, 1 steal, 3 blocks and 1 foul in 36 minutes of action, stays economical in his game. Here’s his shot chart from the game:

According to InStat Scout, Giannis scored in the following ways:
isolation (one on one): 5 points in 5 possessions
crossing (suddenly): 9 points with 5 possessions
post ups (Return leg): 2 points for 4 possession
catch and shoot (Shooting from a standing position): 3 points for 2 possessions
cuts (Cuts to the basket): 2 points for 1 possession

In reality, however, the value of what Giannis has done is shown in a different number that is far more impressive.

Responsible for half of the Bucks points

Giannis has stressed that he is keen to bring his teammates into the game. He showed that again in the season opener, adding another 24 points from his assists and screens, according to InStat Scout. Overall, the Milwaukee star was responsible — directly or indirectly — for 45 of the Deer’s 90 points against the Sixers.

Notably, the Bucks got 19 points from Giannis’ 8 assists, but also another 5 from the screens created and shot by his teammate. However, the second number is fictitious as the Bucks appear to receive 17 points from 7 screens from Giannis. But why are only 5 points listed? Because in 5 cases the “Greek Freak” combined a pass with a screen in a handoff game (hand-to-hand pass). Put simply: Giannis passed the ball to a teammate and immediately shielded to free him, the Bucks scoring easy points that way.

There are 81 games left for Milwaukee, which has a long way to go. Khris Middleton remains out of action and his return will certainly give some. Until then, Giannis must do whatever it takes to keep Milwaukee competitive. Both as a performer and as a creator. Against the Sixers, this led to him being responsible for half of his team’s points. It remains to be seen what will happen next.
