FIBA and EuroLeague are back together for the good of basketball

After many years of “freezing”, FIBA and EuroLeague are back in dialogue for the good of basketball in Europe, Spanish federation president Jorge Garbahosa told Serbian Sportski Journal.

European basketball has suffered badly in recent years from the dispute between FIBA and the EuroLeague, with national teams paying the price and often competing without their key players. Now the world governing body and the continent’s apex seem to be sitting around the same table again to find the solution and move forward with the aim of expanding the sport and its fair treatment.

There are positive examples, the EuroLeague, FIBA and the NBA are sitting around a table to negotiate, to talk. This is an important step forward. Communication was closed for a long time, now it’s open and that’s the best place to start. It’s best together, we’ve seen that working differently for over 20 years isn’t good for our sport. FIBA always tries to talk, to find common ground, but in recent years this has been difficult. You tried to talk and no one answered. This dialog is open again. I want us to move forward together, respecting everyone’s events, their values, every team, every athlete“ were the words of the President of the Spanish Federation, Jorge Garbahosa, in the Serbian Sportski Journal.

According to Garbahosa, the decision of Olympiacos and Panathinaikos to allow their players to help Greece in the two games against Turkey bodes well for the return of Euroleague athletes to the windows: “Our players want to play for a national team, but they also want to play for their clubs. We cannot enable them to choose. They just want to play, defend the national colors and their clubs. I saw that Greece will play in this window, which is a good sign of cooperation. But if we find a common calendar, players can do what they want“.

I agree with what the coaches say about the tough program in the EuroLeague. FIBA is trying to protect players, not expand their competitions. In fact, a summer is now free for players. But there’s still one key player at the table, and that’s none other than the domestic leagues. You are making an extremely important effort. They are the base where all the teams play, where the basketball of each country – together with the federations of course – develops the players. We have to respect the national championships. Every year has 365 days. Do you really think that there is no place for national team games, national league games and European games? There is! We just have to find a dealAdded Garbachosa.

The veteran Spanish basketball player also referred to the Basketball Champions League: “It’s a matter of smart thinking. FIBA created the BCL, such an important event in less than six years, in partnership with the leagues. ACB is part of ULEB, part of BCL and shareholders and this bodes extremely well that if we get together we can get everyone interested and add value to our sport. There is only one player that works separately and we already have a good sample over the last 22 years that this doesn’t work. I hope the future is better“.

NBA: Tension in Atlanta, overtime in Sacramento and confident victory for New York

Six games of the NBA regular season were played on the night of December 21-22.

Atlanta hosted Chicago and lost in a high-scoring game.

The teams focused on offense from the beginning of the match and this continued throughout the game. As a result, Atlanta made 23 three-pointers and Chicago made 20, and both teams had a shooting percentage close to 50. The teams also frequently missed each other at the basket, so the game resembled a constant exchange of points. The leader changed 20 times in the meeting and the fate of the match was decided at the last minute. Prior to that, the Bulls had built a 6-point advantage, but the Hawks nearly made up for it as the opponents took one of every two shots and Young and Johnson each scored three points for the home team. Still, the outcome was 152:150 in favor of Chicago.

The most productive player of the match was Johnson, who fell one assist short of a triple-double with 36 points and 11 rebounds. The Bulls also had a triple-double contender, but Giddy, who had 19 points and 11 assists, was one rebound short.

Sacramento made a great comeback against Houston and won at home.

Having performed better in the first half, the Rockets eventually gained an advantage of 11 points (68:57) and maintained a comfortable distance from the opponent in the third quarter with 9 points (91:82), and at the beginning of the fourth 12 minutes, this difference increased to +14 – 100:86. But after that the Kings made a 12:0 move and practically equalized: 98:100. Houston then had a few-point advantage, but with 15 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Westbrook made a three-pointer and tied the score at 112:112. The match went to overtime and Schroeder’s three-point shot 4 seconds before the siren was decisive – 125:124.

At the end of this match, Schröder recorded a double-double with 27 points and 10 assists. While Westbrook achieved the same success with 21 points and 13 rebounds, Reynaud also played with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

New York confidently won its home game against Miami.

Heat had a successful performance by winning the first quarter with a score of 37:30, but in the second 12 minutes, the Knicks managed to close the gap and take the lead and entered the long break with +4 – 66:62 on the scoreboard. In the second half, New York constantly kept its opponent within two or three attacks and carried the match to a confident victory with 132:125.

Brunson was the best player of the game, scoring 47 points, which significantly helped the Knicks win.
