NBA All-Star Weekend 2022: Cleveland Kids Get Radically Revamped Rise-Up Challenge
Three games and a clutch challenge comprised the renewed Rising Stars Challenge that opened the 2022 NBA Rising Stars Challenge program in Cleveland. Rick Barry’s team, the team of… locals Okoro – Mobli, was the one who won the trophy.
This year’s Rising Stars Challenge was different than last year. The game between freshmen and sophomores evolved into a minor Final Four at NBA All-Star Weekend 2022, with four mixed teams battling in two semifinals, and Team Isiah and Team Barry battling in the finals, with the latter taking the win and the trophy the crowd, to worship Isaac Okoro – Ivan Mobli who plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Former Kings Tyrese Halibarton and Grizzlies’ Desmond Bain won the Clutch Challenge, a pair shootout at a venue where history was made, such as Ray Allen’s three-corner in the final heat-spur. Tyrese Maxi – Scotty Barnes, on the other hand, had a stadium crying with laughter at her ineffectiveness.
In the first game, Isaiah Thomas’s team beat James Wardy’s team 50-49 thanks to shots from Desmond Bane of the Memphis Grizzlies. Earlier, Jalen Saggs threw a victory-qualifying shot in the trash and in the final, Tyrese Maxi – Anthony Cole’s attempts to “corrupt” Bain’s sanity were in vain.
TEAM ISIAH: Bain 10 (2), Bay 16 (2 threes, 4 rebounds, 3 assists), Stuart 10 (6 rebounds), Edwards 4, Halliburton 2 (4 rebounds, 7 assists), Hardy 2, Atsua 6
TEAM WORTHY: Green 20 (4), Sags 16 (3), Giddy 2 (9 rebounds, 6 assists), Maxi, Anthony 4, Jones 3 (1), Botshab 4
In the second match, people’s enthusiasm for Isaac Okoro – Ivan Mobli was high and so Team Barry clinched the win against Team Payton (50-48) to advance to the final. The two Cavaliers youngsters did a good job, but Jay-Sean Tate cleaned the laundry with a basket that sent Gary Payton’s team to the canvas.
Team Barry: Tate 7 (1), Wagner 3, Mumble 13 (6/10 two points, 8 rebounds), Okoro 6, Cunningham 13 (2 three points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists), Daniels 4, Sengun 4
Team PAYTON: Bowl 8 (1), Barnes 9, McDaniels 12 (2), Dosunmu 5 (1), Highland 10 (2), Cumminga 2, Henderson
In the finals, Isaiah Thomas’ team was +6 (18-12) and needed seven points to win, but Rick Barry’s team clinched an 8-0 win over the Shengun – Tate Rockets, went with a three -Points win in the lead Wagner’s shot delivered the win (25-20) and together the trophy in a beautiful night with more interest than the classic match we’ve seen in recent years.
Team Barry: Daniels 4, Wagner 3, Mumble 5 (1), Okoro, Cunningham 5 (1 three points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists), Tate 5, Sengun 3 (1)
TEAM ISIAH: Atsua 12 (2), Stuart, Curse 3 (1), Cove 5 (1), Hallibarton, Hardy
