The NBA announced renaming of its regular-season awards, renaming the NBA MVP to “Michael Jordan” and Defensive Player of the Year to “Hakeem Olazuwon,” while adding a new award honoring Jerry West.

The NBA regular-season MVP award will now be named “Michael Jordan.” This was decided by the league, which announced the renaming of the 5 individual regular season awards as well as the addition of a new award in honor of Jerry West.

As decided, the prices will now be as follows:
MVP: Michael Jordan
Defender of the Year: Hakeem Olazuwon
Rookie of the Year: Wilt Chamberlain
First sixth man: Johannes Havlicek
Most Improved Player of the Season: George Macan
Clutch Player of the Year: Jerry West

It is recalled that a few days ago the NBA announced the launch of a trophy for the team with the best record in the regular season, while last May it was known that there will now be two other awards: that of the Eastern Finals MVP – named after Larry Bird – and the Western Finals MVP – named after Magic Johnson following a decision several years ago to rename the NBA Finals award after “Bill Russell”.

These are just a few more steps the NBA has taken in its attempt to honor its past while educating its fans.
