The Cleveland Cavaliers have promoted assistant general manager Mike Gansey to general manager following the recent appointment of Coby Altman as president of the basketball business, sources told ESPN on Wednesday.

Gansey’s promotion to GM completes a remarkable rise in management with the Cavaliers. A Cleveland high school player, he was hired as a basketball player in 2011 and now serves as general manager under Altman.

Gansey, 39, has been instrumental in reviving the franchise, including the writing of Darius Garland and Evan Mobley and the hiring of Jarrett Allen and Caris LeVert.

Gansey played four seasons of professional basketball in Europe and the D League before retiring in 2011 and joining the Cavaliers’ senior management as a trainee. Gansey rose quickly, making him the best manager of the year in G League 2018 as general manager of the Cavaliers Ohio Canton branch.
