Who is Mac McClung: The village of 2,000 people, the “No to Itoudis” and the VIDEO with 3 million views
Mack McClung came out of nowhere and blew everything away at the dunk contest. But the 1.88 meter tall is not as unknown as you might think. Sportish presents his journey from a village with 2,000 inhabitants to the “No” in Fener by Dimitris Itoudis in the summer and the VIDEO with 3 million views.
His name is Mack McClung. He is 24 years old. He is 1.88 meters tall. And he’s the man who broke everything and brought the competition back to life at the 2023 All Star Weekend Dunk Contest.
Mack McClung came out of nowhere and stole the show in Utah. At least that’s what most people think. But there are some who knew that this brazen guardian could turn things upside down. And a VIDEO from when McClung was still in high school and has 3 million (!) views shows he’s not as… unknown as people think.
From a village of 2,000 people, a viral phenomenon
McClung is not exactly an ordinary kid. He was born in Gate City, Virginia, a village of just over 2,000 people. Basically it has 2,030 residents at last count and everyone loves American football. McClung’s entire family loves American football and his father and uncle played the sport. But he himself wanted to go the way of basketball.
His parents supported him. And they tried to help him as best they could. They let him travel and compete in tournaments. Until he found himself in a tournament with Zion Williamson and LaMelo Ball. Someone noticed him in 2018. He made some highlights of him. He saw a six-foot-tall child jump on God and nail at will. She followed him to high school. He took out his toy. He uploaded a VIDEO with his highlights. Yes exactly, it’s the VIDEO with 3 million views! This is the VIDEO:
In the 2021/22 season he played for the South Bay Lakers, the offshoot of the LA Lakers. He raged and was named Rookie of the Year, averaging 21.7 points, 6.7 rebounds and 7.7 assists with 37.6% on three points in 36 minutes of attendance. Meanwhile, he signed two 10-day contracts with the Bulls, made his NBA debut on December 29, 2021, and scored 2 points against the Hawks. The cops cut him. He signed a two-way contract with the Lakers, played in one game, and had 6 points in one game against the Nuggets.
McClung had two offers from abroad last summer. The first came from the Shanghai Sharks (China). The second came from Fenerbahce’s Dimitris Itoudis. He turned it down because he wanted to pursue his dream of a place in the NBA. He saw the Warriors cut him at the last minute before the season started.
Eventually, he signed with the Delaware Blue Coats, the Sixers’ G-League affiliate. Keep working. This year, in 26 minutes of attendance, he’s averaging 19.1 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 4.7 assists with 50% on 3-pointers. He went with the tag of the scoring keeper who can… fly and dunk. In Delaware, it adapted. Now he looks more like a playmaker than an undersized shooting guard. This proved enough to land him a two-way contract from the Sixers.
A few days after signing with the Sixers, McClung went ballistic and won the dunk contest with a walk. The world learned his name. Of course, this is nothing new for him. He’s experienced it since he was still in high school, when he was recognized on the street and asked for photos. But his reputation is growing. Basically it started. The next step is what he really wants: to establish himself in the NBA. It will not be easy. But he never made it easy for himself.
