Giannis Antetokounmpo completed his triple-double against the Wizards by dunking the ball for his 10th rebound, and now it’s open for the NBA to knock him down. Read the reason.

Giannis Antetokounmpo led the Bucks to a 117-111 win over the Wizards, finishing with 23 points, 10 rebounds and 13 assists. This was his 4th triple-double of the year. Nevertheless, the NBA is free to delete a rebound from its statistics. His 10th rebound to be exact. And there’s a reason for that.

When the game was decided, Giannis left surprised and found himself under the Wizards basket, knowing he had 23 points, 9 rebounds and 13 assists. So, to “lure” the triple-double, he threw the ball just over the board to be charged with a shot attempt, missed and snatched the offensive rebound right at the end of the game for a 10.

Giannis’ specific move, the fact that he missed the rebound on purpose, should prompt the NBA’s decision to call off his 10th rebound. This is an unwritten rule to prevent players from tracking their own stats. Older people know that this unwritten rule is also called “Bob-Sura rule”.

That’s because then-Hawks Bob Shura intentionally missed his team’s last drive in a 129-107 win over the Nets in 2004 to get his 10th rebound. So he was initially credited with that rebound, which ended the game with 22 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds, which was his third straight triple-double at the time. Less than 24 hours later, however, the NBA voided Sura’s 10th rebound on the grounds that a player cannot intentionally miss a shot in order to get their own rebound.

For the record, in 2003, another NBA player, Ricky Davis, took it a step further when he was looking for his 10th rebound in a Cavaliers vs. Jazz game to hit his first career triple-double. tried to shoot at his own team’s basket (! ), with the NBA voiding that rebound as well and fined him for it comedy of the sport.
