Great pressure on Adam Silver for exemplary punishment of Ja Morad
Adam Silver faces one of the biggest decisions of his tenure as the Memphis Grizzlies know they may be able to do without Ja Morad for a long time.
The two-game suspension announced by the Grizzlies for Ja Morad is just a temporary “bell” for the 23-year-old point guard, who showed up with a gun at a Denver nightclub and even showed it live on Instagram.
The Memphis team’s superstar apologized and said he needed support while the NBA commissioner was under unbearable pressure to punish him in an exemplary manner. Not just because he did what he did, but because he brought the gun from Tennessee to Colorado and had it on the crew plane, which of course is against league rules.
As the US seeks a solution to the gun ownership problem to reduce the daily incidents that lead to murder and death, the NBA knows it must lead by example again. No tolerance and no “discounts”. Memphis knows it’s possible Morad will miss even the rest of the season, but she doesn’t care right now.
It is important for both the Grizzlies and the league to master this situation (another special situation with a negative protagonist of the young basketball player) with careful but at the same time effective moves. Because that’s the NBA, an environment that needs to show the way and its diversity. And so far it’s doing more than that.
As a reminder, Morad is averaging 27.1 points, 6 rebounds, 8.2 assists and a steal per 32.5 minutes in 53 games this year.
