SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio Spurs coach Greg Popovic set a new record for the most wins in NBA history on Friday. Defeating the Utah Jazz 104-102, “Coach Pop” took the 1336th victory of his career.

That win allowed Popovic to take only first place in history, ahead of his friend and mentor Don Nelson, with whom he had worked as an assistant to the Golden State Warriors in the early 1990s.

Popovic would need 2030 games, split over 26 seasons, to set this new record. He has spent his entire coaching career at the San Antonio Spurs.

As expected, the feat was highlighted without fanfares.

Any identification marks are quickly removed by hand or simply ignored by Popovich.

During his 26 seasons at the helm of the Spurs, Popovich has won five NBA championships and 13 league titles. He was named one of the 15 best coaches in NBA history.

Under his leadership, the Spurs won at least 50 games in 18 consecutive seasons between 2000 and 2017, a record.
