the jump to the top
Curry played in the Playoffs for the first time in 2013. These promising Warriors would go on to the West Semifinals after losing to the Spurs of Manu Ginóbili and company, and the next year they would fall in the first round against the LA Clippers.
But with the arrival of Steve Kerr, Golden State turned around and came out on top. And Steph began to take over the league with his fantastic triple-double ability as a banner, but with an arsenal of resources and imagination that never stops growing. In 2015, the first crown arrived, although not before suffering.
Because those LeBron Cavaliers were pesky, especially early in the Finals, where they blew a 2-1 lead and Matthew Dellavedova emerged as Steph’s go-to defender and container after Irving was injured. But the collective game of Oaklanders weighed, Steph lost (especially in Game 5, where he scored 37 points and a memorable image after one of his 7 three-pointers) and reached the first ring.
“I’m back,” but without a crown
The 2015-2016 Warriors swept everyone and posted the best record in regular season history (73-9). In the playoffs it looked like they would be unopposed, even after overcoming a scare due to Curry’s injury that ended up marking a memorable moment of his journey.
On May 9, 2016, in Game 4 of the semifinals against Portland, he returned after missing four games with a right knee injury.. He did so as a change, but the boy struck: had 40 points (plus 9 rebounds and 8 assists), franchise record for reserve since record-keeping (1970). This number is included 17 in overtime, an NBA record (including normal phase). Golden State would end up winning 132-125 to go up 3-1 and put the playoffs on track. In that duel, Steph left another viral image with an “I’m back” (I’m back) that marked the first unanimous MVP in history to return.
Oakland would then go through a very tough series against the Oklahoma City Thunder (going 2-3) and face each other again against Cleveland. A 3-1 start led to the two-time championship, but LeBron James put the Cavs on his shoulder and led a historic comeback that left a season for the books without a prize.
He regained the throne by leading by example
Between 2017 and 2018, Golden State dominated the Playoffsachieving back-to-back titles vs. Cleveland losing just one of 9 games in two Finals series. For Curry, three championships was enough, but he also set a fantastic example.
Why the Warriors They added Kevin Durant and Steph had no problem giving up some of the leadership he had. Because he was the main weapon of the team, but he understood that KD had become that too.
Collective success was above all else, and Durant – in addition – was the one who took the MVP of every definition. But Steph also shone. In 2017, he added 4 double-doubles and a triple-double in that final against the Cavaliers. And in 2018 (the playoffs he reached after overcoming an injury that caused him to miss the entire first round), he finished two games with 30+ points and set the all-time record for 3-pointers in a Finals game (9 in 2 )..
