The story in three moments
glory to Philadelphia
In its early days, the Warriors were based in this city and made an impact over 16 seasons. They have the honor of being the first champions (1946-1947), when the league was still the BAA, defeating the Chicago Stags in the Finals (4-1). They also won the 1956 title there (4-1 over the Fort Wayne Pistons), starring Paul Arizin and Neil Johnston. And there they also enjoyed the appearance of someone who would be a legend: Wilt Chamberlain, who spent 6 seasons with the franchise.
The first title in the Bay
After reaching San Francisco in 1962 (and missing two Finals, in 1964 and 1967), the Warriors appeared as Golden State in 1971. And the first title there would come in 1975. With Rick Barry As a banner, the Warriors reached the finals and beat Washington in full power, sweeping the series 4-0 and capturing the glory again, the first time on the West Coast.
the modern dynasty
The last five years (before those two years without the Playoffs) have been absolutely golden. Steve Kerr arrived in 2014 to shake up what Mark Jackson had begun to put together, and this team with a lot of young talent became a winning team. In 2014-2015, Kerr became the winningest rookie coach in history (67, a franchise record at the time), Stephen Curry won the first of his two MVPs, and the title came after a Finals loss to Cleveland LeBron James’ Cavaliers. (4-2).
The following year, the Warriors posted the best regular season record in history (73-9), also the product of the best start in any major sport in the United States (24-0). Curry won the first unanimous MVP of all time and the records kept piling up… Until Cleveland struck in the Finals, coming back from 3-1 down to take the crown 4-3.
Of course, after that impact, Golden State regained glory. With the signing of Kevin Durant, the Oaklanders would win back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018 (7th team in history to win consecutive crowns). In both Finals they defeated LeBron’s Cavaliers, losing just one game between the two years (2018 sweep). In 2019, the third in a row came against the Raptors in a series marred by serious injuries to Durant and Thompson. KD’s subsequent retirement and physical issues (Klay and Steph) marked the end of this great story.
