BEIJING, China – China state television broadcast live on Wednesday the first NBA game in a year, following a boycott of the league for a controversial tweet in Hong Kong.

In October 2019, when huge, sometimes violent, pro-democracy demonstrations rocked the semi-autonomous region, Daryl Murray, then general manager of the Houston Rockets, posted a message of support to Hong Kong protesters in Beijing.

His controversial Twitter message had sparked outrage from Chinese power and a diplomatic crisis.

Subsequently, several major companies in China severed ties with the NBA, while state-run CCTV stopped broadcasting league games.

On Wednesday, for the first time since October 2020, CCTV aired an NBA game that saw the Los Angeles Clippers dominate the Utah Jazz (121-115).

This is the first mainstream championship broadcast in China in a year and a half.

CCTV boycotted the NBA in October 2019, but broke that rule a year later. No games have been broadcast since.

Despite the boycott, the internet giant Tencent continued to broadcast matches, but with a subscription, thus reaching a more confidential audience.

CCTV gave no explanation for the resumption of broadcasting of the NBA games on Wednesday, while requests from the French Agency remained unanswered.

But Clippers coach Tyronn Lue recently got into an argument with Daryl Morey, who now works for the Philadelphia 76ers.

“The last time he wrote on Twitter cost the NBA $ 1 billion,” Lou was quoted as saying by US media.

“On your knees”

Daryl Morey’s controversial tweet caused a serious crisis between China and the NBA in 2019.

At the time, the league boss refused to apologize and impose sanctions on the former Houston Rockets boss, despite the unfortunate financial consequences of the dispute.

The return of the NBA to Chinese television is estimated in various ways.

“Is it true? The official media is on its knees?”, Plague on the social network Weibo a user, in connection with the apology from the NBA.

“I love my country, but that does not stop me from watching [des matchs de] the NBA “, commented another.

China, home to huge basketball fans, is a lucrative market for sports in general.

But foreign brands and athletes have an impact when it comes to issues that are considered politically sensitive.
