Bucks – Raptors 111-117: Milwaukee double-sided, bent by a Canadian shark
The race
With Holiday, Noora, Matthews, Middleton, Portis in the top 5, the Bucks went lukewarm into the match, too lukewarm for this opponent. Before the five minutes were up, the Raptors had built a 10-point lead (19: 9), with Darwin Ham’s time-out leading to an 11: 4 for the hosts and immediately after a time-out for the Canadians, who took over the baton, to … relax, too much of course, as Milwaukee led the way (32-27), Mamukelasvili gave impressive help and the partial 23-6 brought the hosts to +8 while the crowd enjoyed the night.
With Cousins clearing the rebounds and scoring four points, the Bucks went to +10 (50-40) at the start of the second twelve minutes and +11 (53-42) after Matthew’s first shot. They played with confidence, they had 65% of the periphery by the middle of the season, they got things from both Noora and Hood, and they weren’t threatened until half time because their substitute had no opponent near the basket and Holiday there was to help him find rhythm and feel important to his team. At the end of the first half, the Bucks had taken 29 points from their substitutes, while the Raptors had only seven, at the same time the threes were 13/21 for the hosts and 12/20 for the guests!
At the beginning of the second half, the picture of the game changed. Portis and Matthews were fouled, Ham preferred to manage Cousins minutes by bringing Mamukelashvili in front of him in the game, Trent and Shiakam led the Raptors and 85:85 in the middle of the third period gave the game a wilder beauty. The Bucks finished the twelve minutes with 0/8 threesomes, the Canadians had 1/8 and what we saw in the first 24 minutes was something completely different. As if we were being transferred from one stadium to another at halftime.
The Raptors built a nine point lead (103-94) early in the fourth period and went to +14 (96-110) seven minutes before the final, the Bucks looking shocked but again showing a significantly delayed response in the game against the pistons. They fell to 106-113, but there Matthews missed a free three from the corner to follow up a technical penalty on Chris Middleton for a wrong attempt. Holliday reduced to 110-114, Portis missed the opportunity to get the game in possession as he had 1/2 shots at 12.4 for 111-115, Shiakam followed with 0/2 but Holliday got a bad shot and reversal was never made for the bucks.
