Popovic became the first coach with 2,000 on the same team’s bench
Greg Popovic is now … in a class of his own after playing the Spurs game against the Celtics (99:97 win for San Antonio) as the first coach in NBA history to bench with the same team 2,000 times.
Greg Popovic added another award to his unprecedented coaching career. In the Spurs game against the Celtics (99:97 win for San Antonio), the “Pop” made 2,000 games on the San Antonio bench in the regular season, making history after becoming the first coach to be so many games on the bench the same group.
Popovic, who has been on the bench of Spurs since the 1996/97 season, has a record of 1,325-675 in the regular season, and his résumé adorns five championships (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2014) with the Spurs. while he was appointed coach three times a year (2003, 2012 and 2014). He is currently third in NBA history with 1,332 wins (but also 1,155 defeats) and the first Don Nelson with 1,335 wins (and 1,063 defeats).
For the record, when Popovic was asked about the 2,000 game record and what that means to him, he gave the most … Popovic attack he could: “It means that I’m old, I’ve been in the same place for many years, I’ve worked with great players and blah, blah blah … “. Some things never change. Not even after 2,000 games.
