What does the trade that sent Holiday to Boston mean for Mihailiuk and Panathinaikos?
The Celtics traded two and added a player to their roster, with Sviatoslav Mihailiuk now feeling his chances of making the Boston team’s roster have increased dramatically.
The news that the Celtics have acquired Jrue Holiday, making a huge move at the point guard position, exploded like a bombshell on Sunday afternoon (1/10).
Marcus Smart had bid farewell to the Memphis Grizzlies, the position appeared to be open, and the former Milwaukee Bucks player finally filled it when he was acquired by the Portland Trail Blazers for Malcolm Brogdon – Robert Williams. Two out, one in, let’s see how the Boston team’s roster develops now.
The Celtics have 10 players on guaranteed contracts (Jrue Holiday, Peyton Pritchard at Ace, Jaylen Brown, Derrick White at two, Jayson Tatum, Sam Houser, Jordan Walsh at three, Kristaps Porzingis, Osei Brissett at four, Al Horford at five) and Essentially, there are still five spots left to fill before the regular season begins.
Four players have non-guaranteed contracts. Point guard Dalano Bunton, shooting guard Sviatoslav Mihailiuk, small forward Lamar Stevens and center Luke Cornette. In addition, there are three two-way contracts: point guard Jay Dee Davison, shooting guard Jay Scrubb and center Nimias Keta dream of convincing the team to make them full-time members.
Obviously, after the Celtics’ two outs and one ins, the Panathinaikos world is wondering what, if anything, has changed with Sviatoslav Mihailiuk. The 26-year-old Ukrainian winger can play in two positions (2-3), he can operate well from the perimeter, whether he takes the shot himself or has to come out of the court, he definitely wants to stay in the NBA, and that now the chances of his contract being partially guaranteed have also increased.
Mihailiuk will receive $200,000 if he is crowned before the season premiere (early morning on October 25), but if he “survives” he will secure $1,178,307 of the $2,346,614 he will receive would then claim and receive if he is in the squad on January 10th. With the Celtics already having an open roster spot, Mihailiuk could feel like he’s on the verge of checking the first box. That means being active on opening night.
Even if the Celtics move forward with a new addition, there will be no reason to cut a player. That need will arise if Boston acquires two athletes. In this case, one of Mykhailiuk, Bandon, Stevens and Cornett will have to say goodbye.
Development: The Celtics have agreed to the 15th roster spot with the great Wenien Gabriel.
