Commissioner NBA Adam Silver He stated that the league will announce its final decision regarding potential league expansion in 2026.

At a press conference on the eve of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs, Silver said that the league continues to evaluate the possibility of internal expansion and that the Association will decide next year whether to initiate a formal expansion process.

Las Vegas and Seattle remain prime candidates for new franchises.

In recent years, the issue of expansion has been one of the main topics of discussion around the NBA. The emergence of new teams is believed to have become almost inevitable after the league signed a record media deal worth $76 billion over 11 years.

Las Vegas hosted the first three NBA Cup Finals and has also hosted the NBA Summer League every July since 2004. The city has a strong sports market centered on the Las Vegas Raiders (NFL), Vegas Golden Knights (NHL), and Las Vegas Aces (WNBA).

Seattle also has a loyal and large army of fans. Many are eagerly awaiting the revival of the SuperSonics, who moved to Oklahoma City 17 years ago.

Despite rebranding as the Thunder, the Sonics’ importance remains important to Seattle fans today, particularly due to their 1979 NBA championship.

The NBA hasn’t added a new team since 2004, when the Charlotte Hornets joined the league as its 30th franchise.
