September is typically the time for contract extensions for players entering the final year of their rookie contract. The New York Knicks it’s been a few days but they’ve secured one of the foundational pieces of their short-term future with a renewal RJ Barrett.
As advanced Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN franchise and player signed a four-year extension for a total salary he could reach $120 million if you hit certain goals.
New York Knicks guard RJ Barrett is finalizing a four-year rookie extension that could reach $120 million, his agent Bill Duffy said. @BDA_Sports + @WME_Sports he told ESPN, complicating the franchise’s offseason trade pursuit of Utah Jazz All-Star Donovan Mitchell. pic.twitter.com/6KkGm4ch8o
This trade comes at a time when the Knicks and Jazz would be in full trade talks to find a way for Donovan Mitchell to end up in Big apple. However, as Wojnarowski pointed out, Barrett’s extension should either complicate or delay a potential trade for the Utah star. The Canadian could not be included in any transfer this season 2022-2023.
Beyond that, Barrett’s renewal puts an end to the particular “curse” that has characterized the Knicks’ offseasons for the past two decades. Charlie Ward he was the last player selected by the New Yorkers in the first round to extend his commitment to the team after the end of his rookie contract. It’s been a long time since that 1999, and that’s a sign that things have changed and can continue to change for the better at Madison Square Garden.
What is RJ Barrett’s new contract with the New York Knicks?
