The Knicks agreed to a four-year early $120 million extension with RJ Barrett, which automatically complicates their pursuit of Jazz’s Donovan Mitchell.

Tactical move or last straw? Separately, the Knicks agreed to a four-year, $120 million early contract extension with ARJ Barrett, making it even harder to acquire Donovan Mitchell via a trade from the Jazz.

According to ESPN, the New Yorkers had given Jazz until Monday (8/29) for a potential trade that would include Barrett in exchange for Mitchell. The deadline has passed and the Knicks have decided to extend the Canadian guards/forward’s contract, meaning it’s now difficult — but not impossible — to include Barrett in potential trades for the All-Star Guard.

According to reports from the US, the 2019 NBA draft No. 3 was included in some of the Knicks’ offers, but they could never find a package that satisfied Utah. Now, unless he’s somehow implicated in a potential trade, the Knicks…have to get creative by putting together a package that includes some of the likes of Evan Fournier, Quentin Grimes, Immanuel Quickley, Myles McBride, Obie Taupin and (many) futures Includes draft pick

In the 2021-22 season, Barrett averaged 20 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3 assists in 35 minutes of play.
