Bayern Munich defeated Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt 5-0 at the Allianz Arena on Thursday to open their 2026-27 UEFA Champions League campaign with a dominant victory in Munich.
The German champions controlled possession throughout the match but needed the second half to break down a resilient defense. After a goalless first period, goals from Jamal Musiala, Harry Kane, Alphonso Davies and a late double from Michael Olise secured three points for the hosts.
Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany, appointed to lead the six-time European champions, saw his side dictate play from the opening whistle and create the primary scoring opportunities. However, Bodo/Glimt goalkeeper Nikita Haikin produced several fine saves during the first 45 minutes to keep the match level at the break.
The Allianz Arena in Munich has long been a formidable venue for visiting European teams. Bodo/Glimt arrived in Bavaria focused on frustrating the hosts, maintaining a compact defensive structure throughout the opening half to deny Bayern an early lead.
Second-half goals break Norwegian resistance
The balance of the match changed two minutes after the restart when German international midfielder Musiala scored to give Bayern the lead. The opening goal forced Bodo/Glimt to abandon their compact defensive setup and push forward in search of an equalizer, leaving space behind for the hosts to exploit.
Bayern took full advantage of the extra room. Fifteen minutes into the second period, England captain Kane doubled the advantage with a header following a free kick. Shortly afterwards, Canadian left-back Davies reacted quickest to a loose rebound on the edge of the penalty area to fire home Bayern's third goal.
Olise completed the victory with two late strikes. The French winger scored his first goal of the evening with a long-range shot from outside the area before adding a second goal in stoppage time to complete the five-goal margin for the Bavarian club.
Record opening streak and European history
Thursday's result extended Bayern Munich's historic streak in Europe's premier club competition. The victory marked the German club's 23rd consecutive win in Champions League opening matches, a record that highlights their consistent strength on the continental stage.
Bayern began the new campaign determined to build on their performance from last year. In the 2025-26 edition of the Champions League, the Munich side reached the semi-finals before being knocked out by French champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Bodo/Glimt, based in northern Norway, entered the match following a historic campaign of their own in 2025-26. The Norwegian outfit reached the Champions League knockout stage last year after eliminating Italian giants Inter Milan, before being eliminated in the round of 16 by Portuguese side Sporting CP.
Upcoming fixtures in Champions League league phase
Bayern Munich return to Champions League action on October 13 when they travel to Norway to play Viking. The away fixture will be Bayern's second consecutive game against Norwegian opposition in this season's league phase.
Bodo/Glimt will also be on the road for their next match in the competition. The Norwegian side travels back to Germany on October 14 to face Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund in the second round of fixtures.
