Nicolas Jackson has completed a £65m move from Chelsea to Aston Villa, marking the fourth transfer between the two Premier League clubs this summer.
The Senegal forward heads to Villa Park following the £117m departure of Morgan Rogers to Stamford Bridge on July 21, as well as goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez moving to London and Alejandro Garnacho arriving on loan in the opposite direction. With Villa searching for a centre-back before the transfer window closes and Chelsea holding an excess of defenders, further business between the two sides remains possible.
Financial regulations have heavily influenced trading between the teams over recent seasons. Two summers ago, attacking midfielder Omari Kellyman transferred from Villa to Chelsea for £19m after making six first-team appearances. In a corresponding deal, Chelsea academy product Ian Maatsen joined Villa for £37.5m. Maatsen has since featured 91 times for Villa despite rarely holding a regular starting spot at left-back, while 20-year-old Kellyman moved to Strasbourg this month without making a senior appearance for Chelsea.
The 2024 exchanges coincided with widespread concern across the Premier League regarding profitability and sustainability rules as clubs sought to prevent potential points deductions. While there is no suggestion of wrongdoing by either party, UEFA issued warnings to both clubs in the summer of 2025 regarding player swaps. Both teams were subsequently fined in summer 2025 and placed under strict cost control sanctions and financial business plans.

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire explained the regulatory backdrop: "Both are operating under UEFA cost control sanctions and have to follow a business plan. The two clubs traded Maatsen and Kellyman in 2024 in a deal that made profits for both under Premier League rules, but not those of UEFA."
Despite their extensive transfer activity, Villa manager Unai Emery dismissed suggestions of off-field co-operation between the clubs during a press conference on Friday.
Emery insisted that dealings between the two sides were strictly business-driven, remarking: "Good relations? The relationship is only through deals for money. They want to kill us, and we want to kill them. We have players and we can sign their players but they’re deals for money and players. They signed Morgan and Emiliano Martinez to kill us."
Boardroom Strategy and Key Sales
Direct negotiations between Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris and Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali have facilitated rapid progress on major transfers. Both clubs have been required to adhere to strict business plans mandated by UEFA. According to the Deloitte Money League, Chelsea recorded revenue for 2025 that exceeded Villa's total by more than £100m, reinforcing their position as highly efficient player sellers.
To meet UEFA compliance targets, Villa required a major player sale, prompting the departure of Rogers as their top asset for £117m. Possible discussions surrounding Rogers moving to Stamford Bridge were openly talked about in Premier League dressing rooms at least two weeks before the official announcement.
Villa also resolved a complex situation in goal by agreeing to Martinez's transfer to Chelsea, which was officially announced on Sunday prior to Villa's fixture against Brighton. Villa had signed goalkeeper Zion Suzuki while expecting Martinez to join Juventus. When Martinez's proposed move to Italy collapsed, Villa found themselves holding three senior goalkeepers, including Martinez as their top earner. Chelsea's acquisition relieved Villa of that wage burden while providing Chelsea with an experienced option over Robert Sanchez.
Attacking Options and Loan Agreements
Villa have also restructured their attacking options through the loan signing of winger Alejandro Garnacho from Chelsea. Garnacho arrived after Villa evaluated alternative options, including Harvey Barnes and Crysencio Summerville. The loan agreement for Garnacho includes an obligation for Villa to purchase the player permanently.
Garnacho faces immediate competition for wide positions alongside John McGinn, Emi Buendia, Ibrahim Mbaye, and youngster George Hemmings. Hemmings was selected ahead of Garnacho for Villa's opening league match against Brighton, where Garnacho entered as an 86th-minute substitute with Villa trailing 4-0 at half-time.
The conditional purchase structure mirrors Villa's approach from the previous season, when they signed Harvey Elliott on loan from Liverpool. Elliott received minimal playing time during his spell, ensuring that Villa did not trigger a permanent transfer requirement.
In contrast to the loan arrangements, Jackson arrives at Villa expected to establish himself as a primary forward and potential successor to Ollie Watkins. Although Tottenham Hotspur expressed tentative interest in Jackson, expectations since late July pointed toward Villa if the Senegal international left Chelsea.
The 25-year-old forward previously worked under Emery at Villarreal, where he scored 10 goals in 11 matches during 2023 prior to his transfer to Chelsea. Jackson initially established himself at Stamford Bridge before head coach Enzo Maresca lost patience with his disciplinary record, which included eight yellow cards and two red cards during the 2024-25 season. Jackson subsequently spent a loan spell at Bayern Munich, scoring eight goals in 12 league starts.
Management Influence and Transfer Networks
Emery maintains extensive authority over football operations at Villa, supported by co-owner Sawiris. Villa's recruitment strategy has also drawn on key relationships across European football, including personal rapport between Sawiris and Paris Saint-Germain chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi. Daily Mail Sport first reported Villa's interest in PSG forward Ibrahim Mbaye on May 1 before his eventual arrival at Villa Park.
Prominent football agent Jorge Mendes, whose Gestifute agency was highlighted by former Villa chief executive Christian Purslow upon Emery's appointment in autumn 2022, played a significant role in recent transfer dealings. Mendes brokered the deal for Mbaye and was involved in seeking potential suitors for Martinez during the previous summer transfer window. Mendes had also previously offered AC Milan forward Rafael Leao to Villa, though the Portugal international ultimately signed for Galatasaray on higher wage terms.
