Dutch cycling champion Amy Pieters, operated and plunged into an artificial coma after an accident in Spain, will be transferred to a Dutch hospital on Thursday, her Team SD Worx team announced on Wednesday.
“The transfer will be made by helicopter and her medical treatment will continue in the Netherlands,” SD Worx said in a statement, adding that the 30-year-old runner “is breathing independently” and that the “sedation has been gradually removed”.
The team added that Amy Pieters’ condition remains “stable”.
Last Thursday, she was operated on for head injuries and plunged into an artificial coma at the hospital in Alicante (Spain) after an accident.
This took place during team training near Calpe, a coastal town north of Alicante, and was caused by a clash between team members.
Amy Pieters, 30, is a track specialist. In particular, she was world champion in American racing three times (2019, 2020, 2021) with her compatriot Kirsten Wild and European champion on the road in 2019.
