BRUSSELS – Former Tour de France champion Egan Bernal was taken to hospital in stable condition on Monday after a training accident in Colombia.
In a brief statement, the Ineos Grenadiers team revealed that the 25-year-old Colombian runner was conscious when he arrived at the hospital, but did not disclose details on the nature of his injuries.
“He is stable and undergoing further evaluation,” the team said, adding that Bernal was attending a training camp near his hometown.
According to several media, Bernal was involved in a collision with a public transport bus and will undergo surgery for suspected fractures.
Besides the 2019 Tour de France, Bernal also won the Giro d’Italia title last year.
